RIMUN - Rome International Model United Nations
3rd session - 27th/31st March 2009
WHAT IS A MUN?
The main objective of a Model United Nations conference is to promote in young students a better understanding of world problems and international politics through the use of simulation. All participating schools are assigned to one or more member states of the United Nations (UN/ONU) and/or non governmental organizations (NGO’s) which they represent during the conference. Participants are expected to write resolutions about their assigned issues, in which they defend their countries’ policies. By lobbying the students promote their resolutions and they may merge with others. Completed resolutions are discussed in a formal debate. The Model United Nations program helps to develop writing, debating and leadership skills as well as a global perspective, all invaluable in future careers. In a MUN are present all UN committee and commission (like Human Rights Commission), the Security Council and somethimes special commissions like the ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council)
History of Liceo Farnesina's involvement in MUN programs.
Students from "Liceo Farnesina" started participating in MUN programs by attending a conference in Alkmaar, Holland ten years ago. All of the students were at their first experience and they had to face other students of other nationalities who were experienced MUN delegates. Our students felt the frustration of the lack of experience but were also fascinated by the new world these conferences opened to them. The following year a delegation from our school was sent to Luebeck, Germany. The MUNOL conference had just opened its doors to international students and was very happy to receive us. We still had first-timers but we were better informed about the various moments of MUN. Talking with the various MUN directors from other European school made us understand that students needed to repeat the experience in order to better participate in the various steps. To do this we had to present a special project to the School Board to which we requested the possibility of including tutors, second-timers, in the delegations from our school. We also asked for the participation of our school in at least two MUNs per year , thus increasing the number of delegates involved in the project. After the approval of the School Board we managed to attend MUNs in Luebeck again, in Lisbon, in Bath, in Kalmar (Sweden) and have been invited all over Europe and even to the U.S.A. MUN is an important project of our school. For this reason we have decided to organize one in Rome, RIMUN, hoping that it will be a nice one.
